OUT NOW – Pink Siifu & Fly Anakin FlySiifu’s

January 1st, 2021

Pink Siifu and Fly Anakin’s highly-anticipated joint album, the aptly titled FlySiifu’s, is out now via Lex Records. Both are prolific and celebrated as solo artists: Pink Siifu received universal acclaim for his 2018 breakout solo album ensley and this year’s genre-defying album NEGRO, with The FADER deeming him “one of the most intriguing musicians in Black music.” Fly Anakin, known for his technical prowess and a consistent stream of solo music and collaborative projects, has earned praise from legendary hip-hop producer Madlib, who called Anakin “one of the illest MCs.”

FlySiifu’s connects the thread between two adept collaborators and prolific artists in their own right in Pink Siifu and Fly Anakin. The album mirrors the musical community that both Siifu and Anakin are apart of, represented through their own fictional record shop with guest appearances from Liv.e, Fousheé, $ILKMONEY, and featuring production from the likes of Madlib, Jay Versace, Ohbliv, Awhlee, Animoss and others.

WATCH – Run The Jewels – Walking In The Snow

January 1st, 2021

Run the Jewels have shared a stop-motion music video for their RTJ4 song “walking in the snow.” The video—helmed by “Burn the Witch” and “Don’t Get Captured” director Chris Hopewell—features action figure version of Killer Mike and El-P leading a revolution against an icy, authoritarian regime. Watch it go down below.

“It was great to work with the RTJ guys again,” Chris Hopewell said in a statement. “Everyone was very aware of the gravity of the subject matter and RTJ didn’t want to be too obvious or on the nail with the visuals, so we went with an ’80s style fantasy look with evil snow warriors and their icy king oppressing the bedroom toys. It was great to be involved with a project with a positive vibe to end a pretty fucked up year. Big thanks to the RTJ crew for their truth and for letting us work with their amazing music once again.”

Aesop Rock “The Gates” + Spirit World Field Guide

October 22nd, 2020

Aesop Rock, one of hip-hop’s most enduring and illuminating talents, has shared a second video/single leading into the release of his new album Spirit World Field Guide via Rhymesayers. His new video for single “Pizza Alley” picks up where “The Gates” video left off, pulling viewers deeper into a broadening narrative that is rife with unhinged and hallucinatory imagery and animations, an apt parallel to the song’s lyrically labyrinthian titular world. The visual was directed by Aesop’s longtime collaborator Rob Shaw, with illustrations by Justin “Coro” Kaufman, who also designed the album’s art and packaging.

Spirit World Field Guide, arguably the most expansive and ambitious work in the verbose MC/producer’s storied career, is a concept album of sorts; a guide to an upside-down world revealed across 21 insightful chapters of firsthand know-how of the terrain, wildlife, and social customs of our parallel universe. The world explored on the album bears a lot of similarities to our own, especially in its current state. The free-floating anxiety, the looming existential dread, the paranoia and suspicion that define our moment? It’s all familiar turf for Aesop. The path through the Spirit World is the path to freedom, and while Aesop will show you the way, he won’t hold your hand.

WATCH – Sa-Roc “r(E)volution” + New Album Out NOW!

October 13th, 2020

Today, Atlanta-based emcee Sa-Roc drops her long-awaited Rhymesayers Entertainment debut album, The Sharecropper’s Daughter. Produced by Sol Messiah, the fifteen track effort displays Sa-Roc’s crafty wordplay and razor-sharp delivery, as she brings poignant, socially conscious and uplifting messages to the forefront. The Sharecropper’s Daughter is peppered with a powerful cast of guest features, including Black Thought, Saul Williams, Styles P, Ledisi, and Chronixx, as well as one guest producer, Evidence, who made the beat for “Deliverance.”

“I’m super proud of this album,” revealed Sa-Roc in a September 28 interview with AllHipHop. “I’m excited about the content of it. It’s especially timely because it talks about the cycle of injustice we experience in this country. The cycle of emotional baggage in genetic transfer of that emotion… how it frames our perspective and what we can do to reshape a legacy and future for ourselves outside of that trauma and pain we inherit from history, our ancestors, our elders.”

Sa-Roc heralded the release of The Sharecropper’s Daughter with several stunning music videos, including “r(E)volution,” “Deliverance,” “Goddess Gang” and “Forever,”which has surpassed 4.3 million views on YouTube. She gave a resounding performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) series this June, stepping up to the moment with what NPR described as “[P]rotest music for the uprising of the American consciousness.” Tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, Sa-Roc will celebrate The Sharecropper’s Daughter with a live listening party, complete with live performances, special guest appearances, and real-time fan Q&A. OUT NOW – Low Cut Connie’s Private Lives

October 13th, 2020

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” says Low Cut Connie frontman Adam Weiner. “I just wanna do it. First take, right outta the box, hit record, just GO. Everything with this record was a big mess, but that’s what I wanted it to be. I wanted this cinéma vérité approach with no filter, no script, just raw emotion in the voices of these characters. I wanted to capture real moments and make a kind of pure connection…straight to the heart.”

That “straight to the heart” approach has been Weiner’s battle cry throughout this year, and with both PRIVATE LIVES, Low Cut Connie’s wild new double-album, and the band’s TOUGH COOKIESlivestream series, Weiner lands a direct hit. Exploring the discord and alienation between our inward and outward-facing selves, the 17-track collection is as empathetic as it is ambitious, giving voice to the losers and loners and outcasts who live their lives beyond the spotlight, who stay isolated on the fringes of society without glory or credit.

In what plays out like a series of short films, Weiner’s characters speak directly to the audience, delivering a sequence of candid, revealing monologues. The narrators here are late shift workers, single parents and starving artists, sex workers, gutter punks, and forgotten senior citizens. They’re ordinary folks just looking for escape and connection in a society riddled with bad faith and broken promises. Rather than romanticize their struggles, though, ‘Private Lives’ dignifies them, painting rich, nuanced portraits of the kind of modern American lives that all too often are ignored or misunderstood.

Ultimately, liberation is what Low Cut Connie is all about: liberation from doubt, liberation from insecurity, liberation from loneliness. It’s easy for this world to leave you feeling like a freak or a weirdo or a misfit these days; ‘Private Lives’ is a reminder that we all belong.
