LISTEN – Jenny Hval “Ashes To Ashes” + New Album

August 13th, 2019

On the edges and sometimes in the center of Jenny Hval’s provocative avant-pop music, there’s always been a bold vulnerability. The Norwegian musician constantly pushes the form, herself and her audience to examine complacency and identity, culminating in 2016’s noisy, synth-driven Blood Bitch.

But with the first single from The Practice of Love, Hval indulges some comfort food. With a delicate sheen of trance-lite pop — the kind of rainy-night nostalgia heard on late-night Top-40 radio in the mid-’90s — “Ashes to Ashes” looks back to early Robyn, Everything But the Girl and Sophie B. Hawkins’ still oh-so-good “As I Lay Me Down” as sonic and spiritual guides.

Hval must know that those airy hits of yesteryear contained a darkness within, lonely meditations decorated by arpeggiated synths. “She had this dream about a song,” she sings, setting the tone. “She was certain that it was about a burial, the ritual beautifully written / Even the groove was filled with sadness.”

Even in her newfound sweetness, there’s a yearning to “put two fingers in the earth,” dig her own grave “in the honeypot” and find her mortality. – Via NPR

INTRODUCING – Automatic + LA Echo Residency

August 13th, 2019

OUT NOW – LA post-punk trio Automatic just released the limited-edition vinyl for their lead single “Calling It” via Stones Throw Records. The 7″ pressing also features a cover of Delta 5’s “Mind Your Own Business,” which is also now available on all streaming services. The single, taken from the band’s forthcoming debut album Signal, captures the restlessness of feeling adrift and wanting to start over, encapsulating the deeply-rooted angst that informs the album’s songwriting.

The vinyl’s release coincides with tonight’s launch of Automatic’s month-long residency at Los Angeles’ The Echo every Monday in August, followed by a string of European and UK dates in October, and a show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom in November.

Their debut album ties together their taste for dub reggae, motorik rhythms, and gnarly synth work inspired by bands like NEU! and Suicide with the eerie atmosphere of films by auteurs like David Lynch and Dario Argento for an album capturing what it’s like to feel at an angle to the world. The album will be released on regular vinyl, limited edition bright red vinyl, and CD.

LISTEN – New Battles Single + US Tour Announced

August 13th, 2019

The experimental supergroup Battles, which formed as a quartet way back in 2002, has been pared down little by little over the years. At present they’re a duo comprising guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams (Don Caballero, Storm & Stress) and drummer John Stanier (Helmet, Tomahawk). The band will be back this fall with their first album as a duo, Juice B Crypts, and judging by the first music they’re sharing from the project, the decrease in personnel has not limited the band’s frantic compositional impulse.

They did have some help with the album, though. Juice B Crypts features appearances from Tune-Yards (on the two-part closing track “Last Supper On Shasta”), Shabazz Palaces, Xenia Rubinos, Jon Anderson, and Prairie WWWW. And lead single “Titanium 2 Step” matches them with Sal Principato of post-punk legends Liquid Liquid, who wails and whimpers and howls all over the band’s busily skronking insanity. The song is billed as an homage to New York, where all involved parties are based, and you can certainly hear the resemblance to Manhattan’s nonstop chaos. – –> Read More + Check out Full Tour Dates Via Stereogum

NEW SINGLE –> Infinity Shred “Earth” + New Album

August 12th, 2019

Infinity Shred debuted “Long May You Run” off their upcoming album this week! The album’s second single, “Earth,” is a dreamier and even more heavily cinematic track compared to “Long May You Run,” interweaving elements of EDM, synthwave and progressive metal that all combine to make me feel a swamp of emotions. Melancholic, hopeful, regretful, invincible, fragile, all encapsulated in a dream within a dream. While I am a fan of both Chon and Polyphia, I know I’ll find myself gravitating to Infinity Shred a whole lot more given their less hippy-dippy sound that’s reliant on heavy anthemic waves of dreamy soundscapes and shreddy guitar.

“Earth” comes off Infinity Shred’s upcoming album, Forever,A Fast Life which comes out on August 23rd via the Periphery-owned 3DOT Recordings – via Metal Sucks

NEW MUSIC – sir Was premiers “No Giving Up” via Notion

August 11th, 2019

Basing his sound around loose electronics with arrangements and dashes of his experiences as a Jazz saxophonist, sir Was is truly a unique sound maker.

The best way to probably describe sir Was’ music is non-conforming. Each track he creates weavers between tender and delicate beats with his haunting and chant-like harmonies running throughout. Free of the chains that follow musical genres – sir Was throws in experimental jazz, blues and hip-hop with a minimal yet daring touch.

The latest track, “No Giving Up”, begins the journey of his upcoming album “Holding On To A Dream”. Set out to explore the universal feeling of heartache within relationships when you’re caught between wanting to give up, and when to fight for that person. A tender recollection of his previous relationship, sir Was is set to have a more lush and affectionate sound to accompany this new chapter rather than the lo-fi trademark of his previous work.

“No Giving Up” is a dreamy, groovy and lustrous treat of a record and until the album drops, we are going to have to have this on loop until then. – via Notion

Watch – Rhi’s “Plane Jane” Video – Out NOW!

August 10th, 2019

OUT NOW – “Plain Jane” is the latest single from solo producer, singer and songwriter Rhi, taken from her self- produced upcoming album ‘The Pale Queen’ (out October 4th via Tru Thoughts).

“Plain Jane” sees Rhi take a tongue-in-cheek look at herself, backed by her quintessential smooth beats and production style highlighting her low-maintenance mentality. Rhi explains, “A lot of artists big themselves up in their music. I decided to paint a real picture of myself instead.” A refreshing change to the tendency to self-promote that can often be found within the industry, she presents herself as someone relatable and honest, as light-hearted self-deprecation blends with high quality production, creating an incredible electronic sound that never takes itself too seriously.
