TOKiMONSTA Grammy Nomination – Dance/Electronic Album

December 24th, 2018

After an astonishing recovery and monumental year, TOKiMONSTA is now being recognized for her critically-acclaimed release, Lune Rouge, which has officially been nominated by the Recording Academy for a Grammy Award as 2019’s Electronic Album of the Year.

The nomination is not just an accolade but an astounding achievement for TOKiMONSTA, since she’s not only the first Asian American producer to ever get nominated in the Grammy Electronic category but the first woman to do so. TOKiMONSTA continues to deftly remain between the tastemaker and dance world with each release pushing boundaries and in turn leading to a phenomenal career as one of the top producers in the world. Proving that Lee is well on her way to becoming a household name and is finally getting the recognition she very well deserves.

ICYMI – WATCH – Alborosie + Chronixx “Contradiction”

December 24th, 2018

The new music video for “Contradiction” by international reggae star Alborosie featuring Chronixx is out NOW – WATCH IT HERE!

An energetic roots reggae track used to highlight issues that are apparent in society today, ” ‘Contradiction’ was ultimately a song born from the time we are living in and speaks to the current everyday life, social and political climate.” says Alborosie on the single. The video ends with a snippet of another popular track off the album “Lie.”

Directed by Dameon Gayle, the socially conscious collaboration expertly conveys contradictory situations while two young boys that resemble Alborosie and Chronixx in their younger years travel through their city witnessing violence and crime committed by unexpected figures. In one scene, a father is seen reprimanding his daughter for wearing provocative clothing and in the next scene he is seen picking up a woman wearing a similar outfit.

“Contradiction” is the third single from the studio album, “Unbreakable: Alborosie Meets the Wailers United,” which was released June 29th of this past summer. Enlisting The Wailers United (former members of Bob Marley and The Wailers with the addition of Aston Barrett Jr.) for instrumental backing, the album upholds the tradition of roots- rock-reggae. The album has amassed over ten million streams worldwide to date.

LISTEN UP – Harrison’s KEXP Midnight In A Perfect World Mix

December 23rd, 2018

Harrison is the alias of 23-year-old Toronto-bred producer Harrison Robinson. For the past five years, he’s been pushing a fresh sound influenced by a love for Samurai Champloo, J Dilla, Nujabes, Nintendo, and Parliament. He emerged on the underground beat scene in 2013 with his Analogue Dreams EP before signing to Last Gang Records for the release of his critically-acclaimed, JUNO-nominated 2016 debut album Checkpoint Titanium. This past October he returned with his sophomore album Apricity. The album showcased a masterful fusion of boogie, house, R&B, future funk, synth-pop, disco, chillwave, and more, and also signaled his evolution from sample-based production to full-fledged composition and instrumental arrangements. His exclusive guest DJ mix for Midnight in a Perfect World is a perfect example of his eclectic and groovy sound, as he stitches together infectious house, boogie, disco, funk, R&B edits, as well as a few of his own unreleased tracks in a supremely smooth fashion. – KEXP

Aesop Rock and TOBACCO are Malibu Ken – Corn Maze Video

December 19th, 2018

Malibu Ken, the duo comprised of verbose hip hop mainstay Aesop Rock and abstract-fidelity analog-synth experimenter TOBACCO (Black Moth Super Rainbow) just shared a video for “Corn Maze,” an indelible anti-social anthem from their self-titled album (out January 18th on Rhymesayers).

The Rob Shaw-directed clip depicts Aesop in an insomniac daze where bizarre late night cartoons seem to become self-aware, which proves a sympathetic pairing with TOBACCO’s heady, distorted beats (watch below!). As a whole, the 10-song album exudes a creative synergy that exceeds expectations, as TOBACCO’s pseudo-futuristic production style provides an unpredictably infectious and sublime bedrock for Aesop’s meticulously detailed narratives. The collection is rounded out by nightmarish sleeve art by GUNSHO replete with die-cut gatefold LP’s & CD sleeves that include a pop-out Malibu Ken masks with elastic string.

Bombino Grammy Nomination – Best World Music Album

December 17th, 2018

First Ever Artist from Niger To Earn Nomination + First Nomination for Partisan

“World’s Best Guitarist” (Noisey) Bombino has earned a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album for his acclaimed new record Deran. This is the first Grammy nomination for Bombino, who also becomes the first-ever artist from Niger to earn a nomination. It is also Partisan Records’ first-ever Grammy nomination. Written and sung entirely in Bombino’s native language of Tamasheq and recorded in Casablanca, Deran earned career-best praise, including a major New York Times profile, features with All Things Considered, NPR Music, Vice, Billboard + more. Deran showcases a rich palette – from folk, rock, blues, funk, and of course the ‘Tuareggae’ sub-genre which he has single-handedly pioneered.

Bombino was forced into exile in 2007 after the Tuareg Rebellion and the government of Niger banned guitars and two of his bandmates were executed. A demo tape that he recorded while in exile was discovered by an American filmmaker, who tracked down Bombino and encouraged him to record what’d eventually become his debut album, which came out in 2011 and debuted at #1 on the World Charts.

Bombino will tour the US in early 2019, including a March 20th show at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC, and March 30th and 31st shows at Zebulon in LA.
