LISTEN — Yeasayer Perform On World Cafe

August 21st, 2016

yeasayer-worldcafe

“Musically, Yeasayer has never been able to stand still. Its 2007 debut, All Hour Cymbals, with its world-beat pulse and huge choruses, caused some listeners to peg the Brooklyn band as a bunch of flower children. Three years later, Yeasayer changed course with its synth-poppy second album, Odd Blood. Now, after a much-needed break, the band is on its fourth album, Amen & Goodbye. In this session, members Anand Wilder and Ira Wolf Tuton discuss the making of the new record, including their choice to isolate themselves away from Brooklyn in the name of creativity. Hear the conversation, plus live performances from this year’s Non-COMMvention in Philadelphia, at the audio link [below].” — via NPR

LISTEN — Pill “Convenience”

August 19th, 2016

“Brooklyn art-punk quartet Pill are set to drop their debut album, Convenience, tomorrow. They’ve already shared a third of the 12-track album, and each single has hinted at a comfort and audacity that belies this being their first full-length effort. The first vocal sounds on Convenience are raspy ululations from Veronica Torres, but the album gets so engagingly far-flung from those initial chilling screams. Torres keeps the ear guessing with a deft mix of poetry, rants, laments, affirmations, daggers — all sharp and scathing — aimed at any and everyone who tries to limit her as a woman in any way, shape, or form. Sample perspicacity: “Which is true? Our word is truth among women. Our word is truth against myself. A story retold and refashioned: There is no resolution. Only revolution, in the collected memories of our bodies.” Sheesh. Along with the myriad issues Torres tackles from numerous perspectives of political plight, the sonics accompany her every move, matching her dexterity. From the sultry sax of “Fetish Queen” and “My Rights” to the squelching distortion on “Sex With Santa” and the vibrant twang of “Speaking Up,” each soundscape swells underneath her to lift each mode of her voice to its maximum potency. Pill don’t sound like rookies at all. Through Torres’ strength and conviction and the band’s fearless, exquisite arrangements to bolster them, this album soars.” — via Stereogum

WATCH — MNDSGN “Cosmic Perspective”

August 16th, 2016

mndsgn-cosmicperspective

MNDSGN (pronounced “mind design”) is the project of producer & vocalist Ringgo Ancheta, who has his latest full-length, Bodywash LP, dropping September 16 on Stones Throw Records. Like his brother-in-beats Knxwledge, MNDSGN represents a new wave of Stones Throw visionaries offering soulful, funky and left-field soundscapes live and direct from Los Angeles. On Bodywash, MNDSGN was inspired by early SOLAR records like Leon Sylvers III, Kashif, and Dave Grusin – artists that MNDSGN says, “really embodied that potent feeling in the early 80s boogie/funk/soul/jazz/fusion wave.” He adds, “I was also digging back into some early 90s R&B sounds and started really imagining what it would be like if I had mashed the two eras together.” More prominently featured on Bodywash than MNDSGN’s previous releases like Yawn Zen & Surface Outtakes are his own vocals, which are front and center on the lead single “Cosmic Perspective” and throughout the LP. The MNDSGN sound is rounded out with signature, soulful and bittersweet Wurlitzer & Rhodes chords, along with a backbone of strong, funky beats that harken both to the future and the past.

WATCH — Weyes Blood “Seven Words”

August 15th, 2016

weyesblood-7wordsvid

“Natalie Mering aka Weyes Blood is returning with a brand new album titled Front Row Seat To Earth. For the record’s introduction she is sharing a video for the gorgeous single “Seven Words.” The Charlotte Linden Ercoli Coe directed clip weaves a narrative of leaving somewhere and something that may feel comfortable to get back to where one belongs melding perfecting with the enveloping warmth of the soundtrack. In a statement to The FADER about the song Mering said, “‘Seven Words’ is a wanderer’s tale, a well-worn subgenre in the tradition of farewell songs. The tune itself is trying to evoke the familiar act of leaving somebody in order to save them, or continue seeking. ‘These seven words’ are actually ‘these seven words I say to you,’ implying that words cannot express the feeling of leaving somebody you love.. Likewise the video takes a sideways glance at the weathered symbolism of transforming into a creature that can no longer survive in its previous form.”” — via The Fader

LISTEN — Young Gun Silver Fox “Nauti-Cal: Funky Yacht Rock & AOR” Mix

August 14th, 2016

ygsf-nauticalmixtape

Young Gun Silver Fox — comprised of multi-instrumentalist producer Shawn Lee (AM & Shawn Lee and Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra) and UK singer-songwriter Andy Platts (Mamas Gun) — have created quite the ruckus around their west coast pop/rock sound. Their debut album West End Coast dropped in the U.S. on July 15th to outstanding reviews, and the guys want to keep the musical inspiration going with a mixtape, premiering now exclusively for IMPOSE readers’ ears. Shawn Lee has curated a mixtape called Nauti-Cal: Funky Yacht Rock & AOR, and it is an ever-perfect tribute to the waning days of this gorgeously hot summer. It’s got some pretty gnarly tracks on it, which just emphasizes Lee’s impeccable taste further. It’s a throwback that’s making us happier than clams, and it’s definitely a must-have as we transition into autumn. Says Lee of the playlist, “The late ’70s were a special time. Analog recording was at its HIFI apex. West Coast pop music of the day was sophisticated, crafted, and, well, pretty darn marvelous! I’ve made a mix of the classics—deep cuts and fine examples of an era of music that I loved growing up and that inspired me in making the Young Gun Silver Fox album, West End Coast. AOR, West Coast, yacht rock, city pop—whatever you wanna call it… It’s smooth as hell and makes me smile.”” — via Impose
