LISTEN — Machinedrum “Do It 4 U” + Tour Dates

August 31st, 2016

“When Machinedrum‘s Travis Stewart says his album Human Energy is “healing music,” that doesn’t mean a collection of ambient sounds made of meandering drones and singing bowls. “I think music can be the simplest form of healing for people,” he says. “It can take someone from a dark place to a brighter place. It could take them out of a bad mood. It’s just as simple as putting a smile on someone’s face when they need it. Anything from that to inspiring someone to make music and that can have a positive change in their lives. There’s so many ways to look at it.” Human Energy is far from the new-age CDs of the ’90s. It’s medizin-de and busy with noise, but not overwhelming. It’s quick-paced but soothing, like a hectic splatter painting made with soft pastels.” — via Billboard

Holy Sons, the one-man band of prolific musician Emil Amos (also of Om, Lilacs and Champagne and Grails), will release his revelatory new album, In The Garden, on October 21st via Partisan. In The Garden was produced by veteran John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile, Phosphorescent, Sonic Youth) and recorded at Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey. As heard in debut single and Del Shannon cover, “It’s My Feeling,” Agnello helped Amos channel the creativity, freedom and isolation of a former time, while still sounding fresh and modern.

“The Toronto improvisational band BADBADNOTGOOD recently released its fourth album, IV. The instrumental group includes Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Leland Whitty on saxophone and Alexander Sowinski on drums. The four, most of whom met at Humber College, have become known for their jazz-inflected covers of hip-hop songs and, notably, for their collaborations with Tyler, the Creator. Recently, the band also worked with Ghostface Killah on the album Sour Stones; they subsequently toured together.” — via NPR

WATCH — DJ Shadow feat. Run The Jewels “Nobody Speak” + Tour Dates

August 24th, 2016

DJ Shadow has unveiled the music video for the song “Nobody Speak” featuring Run The Jewels, a standout track from his latest album ‘The Mountain Will Fall,’ out now on Mass Appeal Records. The video depicts a meeting of leaders that quickly descends into chaos, a scene not unlike what is unfolding in governments around the globe. It also features cameos by DJ Shadow and Run The Jewels. Says DJ Shadow: “We wanted to make a positive, life-affirming video that captures politicians at their election-year best. We got this instead.” Says Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike: “It’s such a dope video. It’s what I really wish Trump and Hillary would just do and get it over with…And even in that fight I think Hillary would win – and that’s not an endorsement.” The video was directed by Sam Pilling and produced by Pulse Films, stars Igor Tsyshkevych and Ian Bailey, and was shot in NYC, London and Ukraine.

WATCH — Allen Stone Perform “Naturally” On KCRW

August 23rd, 2016

Allen Stone is incredibly down-to- earth and grateful that he gets to sing for a living – something that was apparent from the minute we met him in the parking lot at 8am for load in until the minute he walked out the door. The self-described hippie from rural Washington is charming enough before he starts to sing, but once he gets on stage, he wins over anyone within listening distance with his soulful sound. We were thrilled to get him back in studio around his latest release – the deluxe edition of “Radius” – and he also treated us to a brand new song. His love for Stevie Wonder comes through more than ever on “Naturally”.” — via KCRW

LISTEN — William Bell On World Cafe

August 22nd, 2016

“After starting his career in the vocal group The Del Rios, soul singer William Bell wrote and released his first solo single, “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” on Stax Records in 1961. While at Stax, he also co-wrote “Born Under A Bad Sign,” which became bluesman Albert King‘s signature song. Five decades later, after not making a record for almost 10 years, he was encouraged to go into the studio with Americana producer John Leventhal. The result was Bell’s new album This Is Where I Live. In this session, Bell proves he’s still a soul man extraordinaire who retains his fantastic voice and ability to sell a song’s message. His band for this performance, assembled by Leventhal, includes Amos Lee and Levon Helm’s daughter Amy Helm on backing vocals.” — via NPR
